Hannah Baker isn’t Aaron Hernandez.
I recently watched the “13 Reasons Why” series on Netflix and was blown away by the real world example of the social roller coaster that is high school. Now this year is the 10 year anniversary of me graduating from good old Auburn High School but the tv show took me back and made me think about how I used to treat people and how others were treated in my school. Some people had it easier than others. Some people were just naturally “cool” and others were naturally awkward and easy to pick on. It’s easy to see that Aaron Hernandez was the former, Hannah Baker was the latter. Aaron Hernandez was the good looking jock with everything going for him. Hannah Baker was the forgotten about awkward girl with nowhere to turn. Aaron Hernandez was a CONVICTED murderer. Hannah Baker was an INNOCENT teenage girl. Comparing the two is like comparing Apples to Oranges and completely disrespectful. There is a big difference between the people who have good hearts battling depression and bullies who
threw away everything.Suicide isn’t a joke, But Aaron Hernandez is (was).
After taking a step back and thinking more, here are my final thoughts on the Aaron Hernandez suicide: I first feel for his four year old daughter Bc he robbed his daughter the chance of growing up with a father. I also find it interesting that we go to the defense of feelings for him yet nevermind the feelings for the families of the people he’s killed. Which are more than one. I bet you all also forgot when he wrote a New England Patriots’ fan a letter giving them suicide instructions when they wrote him expressing feelings. I also find it interesting that we love our military so much yet brush under the rug that 22 military veterans commit suicide daily but you want me to allocate feelings for a guy who gave up his right to freedom by being a shitty human being. I don’t feel bad for a man who grew up with gifted athletic abilities getting a full ride to college playing for one of the best teams in college football. Then he plays for the best NFL franchise with the best QB in history making millions of dollars. He had been given opportunities most of us can only dream of. And he threw them away.
If you live your life by treating people harshly you will sometimes have your life end harshly. He chose his path. He could have been a good person. He wasn’t. I also think it’s laughable that people are coming to his defense saying that him committing suicide so that his daughter and family could be entitled to the money owed in his football contract was “honorable” and “caring for his daughter”. You know what is honorable and caring for your daughter? Not killing people and being a good example so he could be in his daughters life everyday. So no. While I feel that suicide definitely shouldn’t be joked about, I don’t feel bad for him. I feel terrible for his daughter and all families involved. He chose his path. The families didn’t choose to have their own murdered nor did his daughter choose to grow up without a father.
In the end, we all have our demons. Hannah Baker didn’t think that she was good enough. Aaron Hernandez realized he was good enough and couldn’t face himself knowing he threw it all away.
